Vintage Software

Sometime we get interesting questions from our readers like this question:

"Is there someone who has a disk I could use to upgrade from 10.3.9 on my old G4 powerbook?"

Simple question, difficult answer. I suspect that the best way to look for vintage software is to look on Craig's list or on ebay to see if someone is selling older versions.

One thing to remember is that older hardware may not be able to support newer software. For instance, Apple ceased supporting the PowerPC chip with release10.6 (Snow Leopard). However 10.5 (Leopard) required a PowerPC G4 to have a 867MHz or faster processor in order to work.

Good luck finding the software that you need.

Free iPhone & iPad Apps

So you want some new apps for your iDevice but are a bit short of iCash - what do you do?

Well, there is a great app for that - AppsGoneFree.

I've used this app for a while and it delivers reports on apps that have gone from paid to free. You pick your iTunes store, and everyday your little app will tell you what is free today. You can look at past free apps and it also tells you when an app is no longer free.

Its a great app at a great proce (free). Try it today.

AirPrint - cost effective solution

We all love out iPads, iPod Touch, and our iPhones - in fact any iOS device. But there are times when you might want to print something from these little marvels. Apple added printing capabilities in iOS release 4.2. Only one problem - this features requires "special" printers - oh, they can be used with other computers, but not every printer is AirPrint capable.

Several cleaver people wrote software that one installs on a desktop or laptop computer that has shared printers and now those same printers are shared via AirPrint. I tried several different ones and decided that I really like FingerPrint from Collobos. This software is available for Mac or Windows, supports iOS 5+ and is cost effective - it is priced under $10 AND they offer a free seven-day trial!

Installing the software was a snap, and now my iOS devices have several printers available, all for under $10. This solution does require that a computer is turned on and if you choose to print a PDF then a message may pop up on the computer screen, depending on your software and configuration, but this is a small price to pay for this functionality.
