AirPrint - cost effective solution

We all love out iPads, iPod Touch, and our iPhones - in fact any iOS device. But there are times when you might want to print something from these little marvels. Apple added printing capabilities in iOS release 4.2. Only one problem - this features requires "special" printers - oh, they can be used with other computers, but not every printer is AirPrint capable.

Several cleaver people wrote software that one installs on a desktop or laptop computer that has shared printers and now those same printers are shared via AirPrint. I tried several different ones and decided that I really like FingerPrint from Collobos. This software is available for Mac or Windows, supports iOS 5+ and is cost effective - it is priced under $10 AND they offer a free seven-day trial!

Installing the software was a snap, and now my iOS devices have several printers available, all for under $10. This solution does require that a computer is turned on and if you choose to print a PDF then a message may pop up on the computer screen, depending on your software and configuration, but this is a small price to pay for this functionality.

iOS 5 update

As always Apple continues to improve its products. One nice new feature of iOS 5 is that a device can now be upgraded without the need of connecting to a computer.

When there is a new update available, it shows up in General under Settings - Software Update - in order to use this feature, the device must be connected to a wireless network - the device will not update across the "phone" network.

From experience, the update process is painless and works well.

iOS 5 & error (-1303)

So by now most folks with an iPhone 3GS or later should have upgraded to the latest operating system for the iPhone, iPad, iEverything.

Many folks have posted warnings on the Internet about the perils of this upgrade. I too also ran into a problem - the dreaded error (-1303).

To date no one has been able to explain what this error is. I was on Apple Care support, no luck - sad.

To get past this error successfully you want to first synch your device with iTunes, then backup the device again in iTune and if you have any photos copy them off, just in case. After getting the error, press continue to get past the error - the device will upgrade, restart, then offer to restore from the backup that you just made - and it all works just fine.

The new OS is sweet, many new features - one of my favorites is the iMessage that uses the Internet and iCloud to bypass those pesky charges that your wireless carrier wants to charge you for texting.

You should not have a problem with this upgrade, just remember to back up and synch before you start.
