The 411 for Macs in Alaska
Better Internet access for Alaska?
House Bill 107 - "An Act establishing the Alaska Internet Access Authority and the Alaska Broadband 02 Task Force; and providing for an effective date." - (HB107) could be the answer to better Internet access for us all.
The intent of the bill is to:
"The Alaska Internet Access Authority is established in the Department of Commerce, Community, and Economic Development to undertake, manage, oversee, promote, and monitor efforts to provide affordable, reliable high-speed broadband Internet service throughout the state."
If you are interested in better internet access for all Alaskans, contact Representative David Guttenberg ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it ) and your local State Representative.
MacHeist 3If you like free software and solving puzzles, then you'll be excited to hear that MacHeist 3 has begun! This annual event consists of brain teasers and internet-wide scavenger hunts that reward you with full versions of cool Mac apps from independent Mac developers. The games will wrap up with the sale of a hugely discounted software bundle which in the past has been very worthwhile, and a portion of the proceeds go charity. Participating in the mayhem beforehand usually nets a $10.00 discount on the bundle so jump on in at http://www.macheist.com Wikipedia has a good article on the history of MacHeist here. |
What is a Multimedia Hard DriveI recently learned a new term - multimedia hard drive - so what does it mean? A multimedia hard drive is a device that connects to your computer for media files and to your entertainment center for playing - why is this good you ask. Well, let me tell you more. Unless you have a full-fledged multimedia computer for storing and serving your entertainment how do you serve up all those family movies that you've made or all those DVDs that you've bought? Well - I'm waiting....(time marches on) These little boxes let you load your content from your computer and its massive storage system and easily play them on your high-class high def display with 7.1 surround sound. There are two manufacturers that I have uncovered - LaCie and Iomega. LaCie supports both Mac and Windows; the Iomega seems to only support Windows. After reading the reviews, without the benefit of a hands-on test is the LaCie LaCinema Premier - what is really sweet about this box is that it can play iso images, does 1080i upscaling, has optical audio, and hold 1 TB of your favorite entertainment (and it costs less than $400). The IOMEGA equivalent would be the Multimedia ScreenPlay Pro HD - (list $300 to 1 TB). Unlike LaCie this box does not appear to support Mac, does not have an optical output. It does have a 10/100 Ethernet connection - I wished the LaCie box had a network connection. Both devices have a remote control for playback in the entertainment system. As soon as LaCie or Iomega send me one for evaluation, I write up the details - until then, if one of you readers has one, send me your review and I'll publish it.
