I'm old - I forget
Dear IT Doc,
You will love this one. I have forgotten the password I set up to open the
Mac.
I tried to install new Office software and they asked for the
administrator pass word. The hint is it is my wife's name, but for some
reason when I try that it does not work. Could I have another wife
somewhere? Now what do I do?
Dear forgetful,
A great question - thank you.
Well, the first things to try are capitaliation of the name or not - passwords are case sensitive.
If that does not work, then you can take the Apple Support approach - find a OS X startup disk and
restart your computer while holding down the C key (that tells the Mac to boot from the CD drive).
After the system has started, look under the "File" menu for the Reset Password option.
A word of advice: You might want to change your practice of auto logging on - you will end up with
a more secure system and will have less of a chance to forget your password.
Good luck
